Life Trends of mankind

Is life of mankind improving? Do we become more optimistic? What is the rate of change? Are we depressed? Are we happy? Are we going to have more problems in the future then ever? The best way to know it is as usual just to look at the data.

Thanks to Google for exposure of this data. Our main tools are going to be Google Trends for short term analysis and Ngram Viewer for deeper and more general view into human behavior change.

Are we happy? Are we happier ever? Are we going to be happy tomorrow? Let’s check!

Infinite Virtual Wall

N-N communication concept of Infinite Virtual Wall came to me while thinking about popularity of “Before I die I want to...” wall. Image

There are various types of written (Literacy) human communications – each with its characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. While this is a whole separate model I am working on and one day I will publish, here I would like to come with concept of specific application of the model.

External fixed subject of “Before I die I want to...” wall was a good anchor by itself and caused people think about important things in our life, necessity of action, determination of meaningful for each participant and more, but the type of communication  was something interesting that we have not see in other places.

N-to-N communication channels (e.g. forums, legacy stock exchange, conference breaks mingling, Facebook groups) have  amazing characteristics such as chaos-driven communication, subject depth, assembling force of  pertinence and more, while there are pitfalls on this channel and clarity is one of them.

The concept is an infinite visual virtual wall (e.g. Prezi-style) where people would add their thoughts on specific matter.

It could be an unstructured one, manually allocated or automated as the system would analyze the content (and/or tags) and locate it nearby similar ones and creating clusters.

People could give visual characteristics to their messages, add pictures, movies and audio.

People could explore domains of thoughts from high level, drill down to a low level, communicate to specific people (if they want to).

Visualization is important in several aspects.

  • It gives a feeling to people that they stay at the same level comparing to others and relatively to the time and not going to the history as time passes. Fairness sensitivity is one of key characteristics of human psychology.
  • Visual channel is a high bandwidth channel, informative, with high information absorption.
  • It is easy (and critical) to have search/filtering ability, while visual filtering would show not only amount, but nature of left content and help to navigate through it.
  • More space for imagination and freedom

So as a pilot I would like to try Prezi-based “Before I die I want to…” project Virtual wall… This is not the same, but as a check could be nice.

Let’s see where it goes…

Analysis of Contradicting Proverbs / Анализ противоречащих пословиц

Proverbs as a cumulative profile of culture are giving a unique exposure of its DNA. Centuries of natural selection have sharpened the set of phrases, that represent a wisdom of the entire population. That is why it is so exciting to discover patterns within such a diverse and complex system. Opposite/contradicting proverbs are well known for a long time, and frequently are brought as a non-reliable, inaccurate, or unwise source of wisdom and sometimes even proof for the foolishness of the crowd. I had a feeling that this pattern is way too important to leave as a form of confusing disorder.

I have searched for studies that are related to opposite proverbs, found lots of places that provide proverb pairs (usually few), but no study related to it… The world is huge while web is bigger, however that does not mean there is no such study. I would to take a moment to gather and arrange multiple opposite proverbs and try to identify the common pattern.

I have gathered lots of opposite proverbs and idioms in English and probably have found an amazing pattern. While a time-driven natural selection of paraphrases is leaving directives or moral statements, it drops conditions at which those directives should take place. In each proverb pair, there are conditions at which each of those directives would be correct or make sense, while those conditions usually differ for each proverb of the pair.

1×1 meeting environment design

There are lots of discussion about 1xN (sharing) or Nx1 collaboration, which is great, scalable, efficient and so on. BUT taking into account that we are human and most native conversation for us is 1×1 I would assume it will be still strong in our future as it is today.

Today there are few good solutions for 1x1s. Usually it is either you are disturbing or others disturb you.Let’s try to analyse solutions today and come with optimal concept.

Today’s solutions (and their characteristics) are:
